Portland, OR - January 28, 2013 - The MAX light rail train goes directly under the Vista Bridge, leaving many a commuter vulnerable to witnessing the act, or the aftermath, of suicides from the bridge. Most people who kill themselves choose ordinary places: garages, bedrooms, bathrooms. The Vista Bridge soars over MAX tracks and a busy street. The ripple effect of a suicide there can affect hundreds of people. Should the city put up barriers? Beth Nakamura/The Oregonian

  3. Christopher Herrera (left) and Roberto Hernandez, journeyman iron workers, prepare one of the main rebar cages for installation in the new transit bridge over the Willamette River. The support structure will be 175 feet tall and be part of the cable stay-style bridge which will carry light rail, pedestrians and other public transportation, but no auto traffic.
