  5. PORTLAND, OREGON - The Revival Drum Shop is a place that is equal parts store, museum and hangout for drummers and others who can commiserate about living a subculture life, complain about egotistical lead singers and debate - yet again - whether Ludwig Drums are better than Gretsch Drums. 9. Lianne and Jason Greenlees cuddle newborn Norah on Friday at Legacy Emanuel Medical Center in Portland as identical twin Ana rests. Lianne went into labor after attending an Oregon Army National Guard barbecue Wednesday night with her husband, a staff sergeant. The Greenlees were treated to a wedding at the hospital weeks earlier after the staff found out that Lianne’s pregnancy bed rest and Jason’s job with the Army National Guard had prevented them from getting married. 10. Marisol Ramos, with 2-week-old Aracel, and sons Jose, 3, and Daniel, 5, waits for assistance in the lobby of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, Portland Council. As government struggles to meet record demand for assistance, churches and nonprofits that also help form the social safety net are feeling stressed, too. Some have had to close programs (temporarily) or scale back what they do. Photo by Ross William Hamilton /The Oregonian

  11. The Upper Clackamas Whitewater Festival was started in 1984 by the Northwest Rafter’s Association. It’s a weekend of fun, exciting, and safe whitewater activities. This year marks the 28th anniversary of this tribal gathering. Photo by Ross William Hamilton/The Oregonian
